INTERNATIONAL SPY MUSEUM

Camouflage: Designed to Deceive at the International Spy Museum

At the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC, Camouflage: Designed to Deceive explores the art and science of blending in across espionage, culture, nature, and history. Bridgewater was brought in as a collaborative partner to guide concept development and to perform all production and installation. The result is a polished visitor experience that supports both the creative vision of the design team and the operational realities of a high-profile museum exhibit.

The Challenge

With a planned 3-year lifespan, this project needed to meet the quality expectations of the Spy Museum as a premier institution, while operating within a budget appropriate for a temporary exhibit. The subject matter also demanded a visually rich, interactive environment, complete with artifacts, media, and interactives, that would stand up to heavy traffic. To accomplish all of these objectives, early alignment between the museum, design, and fabrication teams was essential.

Strategy

Our extensive experience across the entire project lifescycle, from strategy to design, production, and installation, allows us to think about the impact early decisions will have later in the process. Bridgewater joined this project during preliminary schematic design, providing guidance on feasibility, cost, and technical execution in collaboration with exhibition designer Local Projects. This allowed the combined team to prioritize high-impact moments like the immersive central hub, while simplifying other elements within the space as necessary.

Design

Working closely with the Spy Museum and Local Projects, Bridgewater helped shape how the exhibit concept translated into physical space. With four galleries extending from a central hub, the experience explores a variety of subject matter on the theme of camouflage, through artifact displays, media, and hands-on interactives. Our guidance on elements ranging from spatial flow to materiality, LED display integration, and technical implementation ensured a cohesive experience continued through every step of the visitor journey.

Production

Bridgewater’s in-house team executed all fabrication at our facility in Chicago and performed a seamless installation on-site in Washington, DC. We produced custom structures, scenic elements, environmental graphics, and integrated AV systems across the entire exhibit. Highlights included large-format LED media in the central hub and interactives exploring camouflage through digital and physical engagement in the four gallery spaces. Materials and fabrication methods were selected to balance durability with cost-efficiency, ensuring a flawless guest experience.
